Respected or appreciated?

Assalamu'alaikum.

A friend of mine once asked me,"which one do you want, to be respected or appreciated?"

Were there any differences between these two actions?Of course there are,but it's quite difficult to differentiate as both of them are more or less the same..

    salam
    respected as if you have a quality or certain level that people will pay an attitude of admiration or esteem

    ex: I respect my lecturer...

    appreciated
    Recognize with gratitude; be grateful for, treasure of something that have been done by someone

    ex: my lecturer appreciates my effort to do her assignment at my best
